History of 5J

In 1972, James Obadiah Fleming saw a gap and filled it. With a deep understanding of craftsmanship and a drive to serve, he founded Fleming & Son Corporation in the growing DFW Metroplex to meet the demand for in-house metal fabrication. A Mississippi native, James and his wife Pat made Grand Prairie the hub of their business operations, where they poured their energy into perfecting the trade. Over time, the business grew, adding services like upholstery, seating, striping and demolition.

The ’80s and ’90s marked a boom, especially in the areas of conversion van compliance, aviation outfitting, and custom parts manufacturing. At its height, Fleming & Son Corporation operated multiple businesses under its umbrella, each one reflecting James’ tireless work ethic and commitment to quality.

In 2020, James’ son Clay stepped forward to continue that vision with the launch of 5J Construction. What began as an extension quickly became its own force, rooted in the same values James lived by: hard work, sacrifice and servant leadership. Those principles live on not just in Clay, but in his sons Austin, Chandler, and Clayton, who are each carrying forward the family name with pride and purpose.

That legacy is felt in the loyalty of the 5J team. Some team members have been with the company for decades; one just celebrated 40 years. Even the youngest employee has been part of the work family for 20 years. This kind of continuity isn’t common. But then again, neither is 5J Construction.

Though James is no longer with us, his influence runs deep. Clay has honored his father’s foundation, while bringing his own convictions to the business including faith, balance and a constant eye toward innovation. At 5J, the question is never “Can we do this?” It’s “How can we do it better?”

Walk through their shop on any given day, and you may find Clay at the drawing board or on the shop floor, working side-by-side with his crew. They don’t ship out ideas to be made elsewhere. They build them in-house, and they build them right.

And in doing so, they build something even greater—trust that stands the test of time.
